Here’s a list of my 15 favorite hustle quotes, because who doesn’t love a good quote list?
Quotes are great for all sorts of moods- inspiration, peacefulness, mindfulness, etc. These quotes in particular are hustle quotes. They are designed to get you motivated and moving. They’re my personal favorite 15 that always manage to get me going.
1. “He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life.”
A quote about risk-taking? The perfect place to start this list! Side hustling doesn’t always seem like a risk per se. But, it takes so much courage. It can be difficult to put yourself out there to the world, be vulnerable, and market yourself. This is especially true if you’ve been at a day job for quite a while and a lot of your own identity is as an employee of your company. Now, you no longer have your company’s communications and marketing team to get your word out for you. You need to market your side hustle on your own, which definitely takes courage. Channel your inner Muhammad Ali with this quote, one of my favorite hustle quotes.
2. “Optimism, pessimism, f*** that – we’re going to make it happen. As God is my bloody witness, I’m hell-bent on making it work.”
This. Guy. I love the intensity, passion, and not-taking-no-for-an-answer attitude his hustle quotes have. Pretty much three traits side hustlers and entrepreneurs need. It can get exhausting to feel like your progress is slow, you’re not sure if your hustle is worth the time, you see friends less, you still feel strapped for cash, the list goes on and on. In my experience, those obstacles never go away. We just need to get better at ignoring them. This quote is sure a step in that direction!
3. “Contrary to popular opinion, the hustle is not a new dance step- it is an old business procedure”
Every once and a while people tell me that hustle has a negative connotation with it. To me, it’s not about cheating, and it’s definitely not about a dance step. It’s an unstoppable, enthusiastic way of making money and running/creating a business. And, as this quote reminds us, there’s nothing new about it. Hustlers have been making the world turn for quite some time now. Why should we question their tried and true ways?
4. “You don’t learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing, and by falling over.”
This is the type of quote I try to read/remind myself of each Sunday as the week is about to begin and I’m wondering how I’m going to get everything done. That leads to further questions of whether what I’m doing will even be worth it. It’s crazy how easy it then is to talk myself out of trying whatever new is on my plate at all.
5. “It’s important to be willing to make mistakes. The worst that can happen is that you become memorable.”
A wonderful reminder from the entrepreneurial queen herself to be willing to fail. So much of what we want to do but don’t do is because we’re afraid of the outcome. I definitely know this to be true myself, even though I’m not really a shy person. Still, it’s only natural to feel afraid something we try won’t work out or will work out poorly. That doesn’t go away. We have to be willing to accept those risks. Thanks for the reminder, Sara!
6. “The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.”
If this “doing beats analyzing” attitude works for the man who started the most recognizable brand in the world, then it works for me, too. This is one of the msot common concepts for entrepreneurs to embrace, which is that it’s more important to start with an imperfect idea than to wait to start until a perfect idea comes along. I struggle with this quite often, but do feel I’ve gotten better at “just starting” the further along I get in my side hustle journy.
7. “If you’re not embarrassed by the first version of your product, you’ve launched too late.” Reid Hoffman
Does this resonate with you as much as it does me? Have you ever had a wonderful, beyond brilliant idea that you work so hard on just to execute and feel like it’s a big joke? Well, you’re not alone, and there’s even a name for this! If you’re a side hustler, more likely than not you’ve experienced Imposter Syndrome. It’s a very real issue so many face and there are ways to overcome it. The good news is that you’re not alone and according to Reid Hoffman, it’s somewhat of a universal experience for entrepreneurs.
8. “Work like there is someone working 24 hours a day to take it all away from you.”
This is such a unique outlook and I love it. It makes me remember how grateful I am for my side hustle and entrepreneurial pursuits. No matter how frustrating it can get at times, I wouldn’t trade for anything and I’m so grateful that I am able to do what I do. I love looking at this one on Wednesdays when I’m feeling run down from my job and side hustles. It reminds me that I choose this, it’s not forced upon me, and I choose it because I love it.
9. “No matter how much money you have, you can’t buy more time.”
It’s this sort of mentality that pushed me hard to quit my job at a law firm. As difficult as it was to leave an income, I kept telling myself that it wasn’t more money I needed, it was more time. As with most of these pieces of advice (and life in general), it’s easier said than done. But, I try to remind myself of this concept often and am optimistic that the more I remind myself of it, the more naturally it will play out in my life and decisions.
10. “We are what repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit.”
See above. That is all.
11. “Each day wake up and ask yourself what will make you feel most alive that day.”
This is a great reminder for side hustling and otherwise. It’s the general idea that we should spend our days doing what we love. Hopefully, your side hustle is something you are head over heels in love with. It’s your spare time, after all! If you’re not totally lit on fire by your side hustle, hopefully, your side hustle is at least getting you toward a goal that makes you feel alive. That could be traveling more, paying off debt, donating money to a cause near to your heart, or anything that lights you on fire. That’s what this is all about.
12. “The secret of getting ahead is getting started.”
Whether you’re beginning your novel like Mark Twain or sprinting for the NFL, these timeless words of wisdom hold true. This closely mirrors the Disney quote above about getting started. This can be particularly hard for perfectionists who find that they struggle to launch new products or items until they are deemed “perfect”. Of course, nothing is perfect, and if you wait too long, someone else with your idea could beat you.
13. “Give your dreams all you’ve got and you’ll be amazed at the energy that comes out of you.”
Ever notice how tired you can feel at 2 PM at work, but then how suddenly energized you feel after work, once you’re spending your time on something you love? I think that this quote sums up that phenomenon well! I’ve noticed at times, when I’m really flying through work that I love, I can forget about meals, sleeping, and other very normal, natural needs. Passion is an amazing, powerful thing!
14. “You can’t have a million-dollar dream with a minimum-wage work ethic.”
Stephen C. Hogan
This is one of those hustle quotes that is the kick in the pants I need sometimes. As side hustlers, we work a LOT between our day jobs and our side jobs. I am guilty of finding myself sometimes saying that I am just too tired to work or that I deserve a break. This is one of those hustle quotes that remind me that you get what you work for, and if I want a break in working I’ll get a break in results. (Note, this does not mean I don’t deserve in breaks in general, they are essential to keep you sane! But, I don’t like thinking I deserve one. I am doing this by choice.)
15. “Things may come to those who wait… but only the things left by those who hustle”
(falsely rumored to be said by) Abraham Lincoln. (It’s such a good quote I couldn’t help but include it.)
So this was not said by Abraham Lincoln. But, that doesn’t make it any less amazing. This is one of my favorite ones to read early in the morning when I struggle to get out of bed or after work when I just want to relax but should work instead. It always gets me going and exemplifies that passionate feeling that keeps me hustling.
